Éric Charden was born to a French father, a port engineer, and a Tibetan mother. During World War II, he spent his early childhood in Indochina before moving to Marseille, France, with his mother in 1950. His father returned to France permanently in 1954. Academically accomplished, Charden earned his Baccalauréat and later graduated from HEC Paris in 1960.
