Salif Keita is one of Africa’s most celebrated artists, often called the “Golden Voice of Africa.” Born in Mali to royal lineage descending from Soundjata Keita, founder of the Malian Empire, he faced rejection in childhood due to albinism but persevered through music.
Keita rose to prominence in the 1970s with the Rail Band and later Les Ambassadeurs before launching a successful solo career in Paris in the mid-1980s. His landmark albums Soro (1987), Amen (1990), and Moffou (2002) blended West African traditions with jazz, funk, and pop, earning international acclaim and Grammy nominations.
Remaining creatively active for decades, he released later highlights such as La Différence (2010) and Un Autre Blanc (2018), after which he announced his retirement from recording. Salif Keita’s influence and legacy continue to shape African and global music.
